Roll Gently in Your Grave, Mr. Collins
A tribute to Sailor Jerry Collins from the Carnie Family and friends. I painted the cover illustration from a Sailor Jerry design and appear inside with a photograph and biography.
The Carnivale Tattoo Songbook
Musicians sent in their lyrics in their own handwriting. A tattooer then made a flash-style painting based on each song’s lyrics. The book pairs the handwritten lyrics with those paintings, with songs by the Ramones, Belly, Frank Turner, Mary Gauthier, the Menzingers and the Handsome Family, among many others.
I wrote the introduction. Here is a little of it:
From the introduction
“Organizing the vast chaos of story-telling tradition… it’s skulls and ballads, it’s pin-ups and train songs… their soft brushes and sharp pencils whistleblow that mournful warning: We can’t know where we’re going if we don’t know where we’ve been.”
Andy Hinton · Vienna, 26 March 2023
Handwritten & Spitshaded
Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, Mallorca · 2–3 September 2016
I took part in this exhibition of paintings inspired by songs, presented during VanBig Carnivale in the museum courtyard. It brought together musicians and tattooers, with each painting responding to a musical composition.
